With today’s economy any job would be a dream job. Yet, nearly 80% of Americans claim that they do not have their dream job. When asked to describe what a dream job is- the number one answer on most surveys has not been money or the city, the boss or duration of work, or work benefits- but simply going to work and having fun. Fun being work which is enjoyable and has minimal stress.

For the majority of responders, salary was the last on the least as what a dream job should be. The second most common answer of what a dream job was- most responders said making a difference in someone else’s life or helping society at large.

For some people having a certain job means a dream job. Among the different professions, the majority who said they had a dream job were the police, firefighters, emergency medical service and lawyers. Surprisingly teachers were not at the top. Perhaps they were looking for money. Physicians even though make a difference in peoples lives and make a handsome salary were still not happy about their jobs- perhaps some people are just simply not satisfied.

The least preferred jobs in all survey were those that dealt with accommodation, hotels and the food industry. The majority of the people in the manufacturing and retail business claimed that there jobs were the worst.

As far as the city was concerned, most people claimed that living in Boston was as good as having a dream job. This was followed by Sacramento and San Francisco. Unfortunately, New York and Detroit were right close to the bottom.

Some people claimed that living in cities like Miami, San Diego and Atlanta deprived them of their dream jobs. The reason was that there were far too many qualified applicants for each job.

Even though many different reasons have been given as to what makes a dream job, the majority of people on surveys done in 2008 offer a different perspective as to what is a dream job. With the economy down and unemployment high, inflation beginning to pick up, the majority of people surveyed agreed that any job today which offers permanency, some medical benefits and is not far from the home- is considered a dream job.
